Deixis and discourse particle: the case of to in Modern Hindi
Deixis et particule énonciative : l'exemple de to en hindi
Résumé
The modern Hindi particle to comes from a deictic basis which was previously a dictic and a third person pronoun, then a correlative pronoun, and, adverbialised, became a connector or coordinator (« then, so »). The behaviour of these categories may serve as a starting point for the operation which characterizes the discourse particle in its thematizing use as well as its sentence particle use with scope on the whole statement. The paper aims at describing the operation marked by to with help of the notions of alterity and (dis)continuity in relation to an already given term or content, since there is at the same time an anchoring on the initial « given » (continuity) and its requalification or challenging (discontinuity)
La particule hindi moderne to a d’abord été une base déictique et un pronom de troisième personne puis un pronom résomptif, ou corrélatif, et adverbialisée, un connecteur et un coordonnant (« alors, donc »). Le fonctionnement de ces catégories peut servir de point de départ de l’opération qui caractérise la particule énonciative, aussi bien comme particule de thématisation que comme particule de phrase portant sur l’ensemble de l’énoncé. L’article vise à décrire l’opération que marque to en faisant appel à la notion d’altérité et de (dis)continuité par rapport à un donné initial, dans la mesure où il y a en même temps renvoi à ce donné initial (continuité) et remise en question ou requalification de ce donné (discontinuité).
