Histoire politique des élites et histoire économique. L’exemple des Caii Iulii et des Marci Lucretii à Pompéi
Résumé
This paper aims at proposing new reflexions on Pompeian electoral inscriptions, to see whether they might help in perceiving Pompeian élites’ urban properties. All of the texts are considered being the visible part of a true electoral campaign – as opposed with a ‘ritual’ practice – and thus being aimed at convincing people through a propagandistic communication. Two examples are used to illustrate such reflexions: Caius Iulius Polybius and M. Lucretius Fronto, who both ran for various elections during the last years of Pompeii. It appears that both had a parallel political career, using ‘family’ properties as campaign bases, at least for their entrance into politics: it allowed them to use the neighbourhood as a first support. For the subsequent campaigns, after being elected as aediles, they might have use another place as a campaign base, though keeping other family properties as support.
