Abstract : During the archaeological excavations of the Gallo-Roman site of Bétheny (“Les Ecavés”, in northern France), the disconnected remains of an adult placed in a stone coffin were recovered. Detailed excavation and analysis of the bones and the structure of the remains indicate a complex burial process. Although some actions have been identified (fractures, wrapping), the thinking behind these actions is not easy to discern, which raises the question, amongst others, of the practical and/or symbolic dimension of the gestures recognized.
