Quantifier une abstraction ? L’histoire du "nombre des fonctionnaires" en France

Abstract : Starting with efforts to get past the debate on “the anachronism of long series” published by Genèses in 1992, this article aims to present the analytical framework used for assessing the abstraction “the number of civil servants” in France from the mid-nineteenth to mid-twentieth century. Using a “reconstructionist” approach, we propose moving beyond current oppositions between qualitative and quantitative undertakings and between positivist fetishism and constructivist rejection of quantitative materials in the social sciences.
