A Linguistic Approach to David Mitchell's Science-fiction Stories in Cloud Atlas

This article shows how a writer can write two science-fiction stories in two radically opposed stylistic ways. It seems a truism to say that the same language can create two different fictional worlds by deploying linguistic tools that are adapted to the sought aim. But David Mitchell does much more than using language to that purpose: he remodels Standard English to produce the world he has in mind. The two finely designed languages do not merely reflect the story they narrate: they give it substance, they make it possible. I thus analyse here how the genetically-controlled world of 22nd-century Korea and the postapocalyptic story depicting a humanity back to the Iron age in the distant future on Hawaï are produced by two discourses that could not be further apart as far as their vocabularies, morpho-syntaxes, styles and rhythms are concerned, as well as the treatment language undergoes in each narrative.

Cet article montre comment un auteur peut écrire deux histoires de science-fiction de deux façons radicalement opposées. Il peut sembler un truisme de dire que la même langue peut créer des mondes différents en déployant des outils stylistiques adaptés au but recherché. Mais David Mitchell fait bien plus qu‘utiliser la langue à cet effet: il remodèle l‘anglais standard de façon à produire le monde qu‘il a en tête. Les deux idiomes finement modelés/façonnés ne sont pas un simple reflet de l‘histoire qu‘ils narrent : ils lui donnent forme, ils la rendent possible. Ainsi nous analysons ici de quelle manière le monde génétiquement contrôlé dans la Corée du XXIIe siècle et l‘histoire postapocalyptique figurant une humanité de retour a l‘âge de Fer dans un avenir lointain sur l‘île de Hawaï sont produites par deux discours qui ne pourraient pas être plus éloignés l‘un de l‘autre par leurs lexiques, leurs morpho-syntaxes, leurs styles et leurs rythmes, ainsi que le traitement que chaque narration fait subir au langage.
