Carte marine et culture visuelle chez Giovanni Villani et Fazio degli Uberti

Abstract : The relationships between medieval texts and maps are complex. Two fourteenth-century Italian examples considered here, however, the Nuova cronica of Giovanni Villani and the Dittamondo of Fazio degli Uberti show how maritime maps can be used as part of a synthetic vision of the world. This article considers the relationship between texts and maps together with the way in which the cartographic image feeds and informs textual representations.
