La temporalité dans le conte : quelles attentes ? Le cas de la locution adverbiale « Once upon a time »

Abstract : The clichéd adverbial phrase Once upon a time is very likely to be one of the first elements that a reader will connect to the appellation ‘fairy tale’. It immediately enables him/her to enter into the tale’s temporality. Here, a study is presented to analyse the impact that this phrase has on the way time is perceived in fairy tales. It is then briefly compared to its French counterpart: Il était une fois, which, contrary to Once upon a time, contains a verb. Finally, the links that Once upon a time can draw with the wonderful will be examined, considering it is a label strongly associated with the fairy tale. In this way, the article will specifically examine the extent to which the phrase constitutes a gateway into the fantasy world.
