Abstract : In a short paper of 1934, Carnap clarifies the distinction he wants to establish between theoretical questions and practical decisions, on which depends most of his philosophical project after he has adopted the principle of tolerance. Relying on works published in the 1920s and the 1930s, some commentators have interpreted this distinction and Carnapian non-cognitivism in moral matters as the sign of a large gap between practical and theoretical philosophy, and the testimony of a deep influence of a German brand of philosophy which includes Nietzsche, Lebensphilosophie, and romanticism, far away from the tradition of Enlightenment, to which Carnap’s thinking is sometimes interpreted as belonging. However, later works from the mid-1940s onward (on inductive logic, confirmation, and rational decision) suggest another reading. Far from deepening the gap between practical and theoretical philosophy, Carnap rather tried to make use of our logical tools and scientific knowledge to define criteria of rationality of our values and our decisions, be they practical or theoretical, without renouncing the distinction he had explained and discussed in the 1934 paper. Such reading tends to challenge the “romantic” interpretation of Carnap’s practical philosophy.
