The other Psalm singing: Biblical training in the French catholic "petites écoles" during the Renaissance

Résumé

Psalm singing in Calvinist schools helped to the rise of the Reformed identity within the general process of confessionalization at the end of the 16th century. However, its catholic counterpart is nearly unknown even if Latin psalms were massively used to learn reading. Moreover, psalm singing allowed children to take part to numerous liturgical foundations or to the parochial divine worship. This paper will aim to show how this kind of Biblical training contributed to a practical appropriation, if not to an assimilation of Latin psalms even by non-latinist pupils.
