What do we know about the sharing of mineral resources rent in Africa?

Abstract : Governmentsthatlackthecapacitytomineresourcesthemselveshavetoattractforeigndirectinvest- ment. However,sinceresourcesarenotrenewable,countriesneedtocapturea ‘fair’ share ofmineral resourcerenttopromotetheirdevelopment.Whilethesharpriseoftheworldpricesofmostminerals multiplied thetotalnaturalresourcesrentsby2.3between2002and2008(WorldBank,2015), tax revenueearnedbyAfricangovernmentsfromthenon-renewablenaturalresourcesectoronlygrewbya factor of1.5(Mansour,2014).The sharingofmineralresourcerentbetweengovernmentsandinvestorsis oftencriticisedforbeingunfavourabletoAfricangovernments.Butwhatdowereallyknowaboutthe sharing ofmineralresourcerentinAfrica?Theaimofthisstudyistoreviewtheoreticalandempirical studies onrentsharinginAfricaandtonotetheirlimitationsregardingknowledgeoftheactualsharing of mineralrent.
