Les termes d’adresse en polonais et en français : en quête d’équivalents

Abstract : As part of the very complex phenomenon of verbal politeness, terms of address reflect verbally the status of interpersonal relationships. Except for their primary function as deictics, terms of address allow to communicate the degree of deference, the speaker and hearer’s social position and the nature of their relationship. Their exact form and use differ from one culture to another, each society conceptualizing its structure and the construction of social relations differently. Based on a French and Polish bilingual corpus, this paper compares characteristic features of each language’s system of address. By analyzing most commonly used forms in similar contexts, I attempt to suggest a solution of equivalence focusing on forms presenting the highest degree of discordance. The equivalence is the result of several factors combined, such as the type of context, the nature of interpersonal relationship, the relational distance and the degree of politeness.
