_Doctor Faustus_ and the Contemporary French Translation of the _Faustbuch_
Résumé
Proposes that the French translation of the _Faustbuch_ by Pierre-Victor Palma-Cayet, on the hypothesis of its composition and circulation prior to its first known publication, may have inflected the use that Marlowe made of his primary source, the English translation of "P.F.", in producing _Doctor Faustus_. This inflection may be detected not only in specific passages but in the tragedy's adherence to medieval dramaturgy and mitigation of the Calvinist theology imported by the English translator.
