Le Epitomae e le Epistolae di Virgilio Marone Grammatico : indagini testuali per un'interpretazione

Abstract : This essay describes the considerable import of the Epitomae and Epistolae of Virgilius Maro Grammaticus for seventh century philosophical and theological thought. His works are among the most puzzling surviving medieval texts, as they are presented in the form of grammatical precepts, while in fact only adhering in form to the standards of the time: they make wide use of altered rules and contain parts which been analysed as the poetic philosophical encryption of the scinderatio fonorum. The works are interwoven with theories, often at the margins of orthodoxy, with some contradictions between the philosophical and religious traditions. They include themes such as world creation, the theory of the soul, the existence of artificial language of the twelve Latin types, these being endorsed by non-existent authorities and unattested quotes.
