Représentation et reproduction du discours dans la correspondance de Cicéron

The phenomena of discourse will be studied within the framework of a formal continuum from direct citation to paraphrase/reformulation. Using Cicero's correspondence as corpus, different textual strategies will be analysed, particularly those which help the reader to find references to what he wrote in his turn in the replies. Special attention will be paid to two explicit types of discourse reproduction, parenthesis with ut scribis and quod-clauses, and to one example of implicit reference. All these cases can be classified on the pragmatic level by means of a functional continuum, or continuum of appropriation of other people's words: it starts with adherence, includes manipulation (distance between the interlocutors) and ends with propositional change.
