LA POPULATION DE L'ILE-DE-FRANCE : CARACTERISTIQUES ET EVOLUTIONS DEMOGRAPHIQUES D'UNE METROPOLE INTERNATIONALE

Abstract : [The principal french region, chief town of which is Paris, is among the great metropolis of the world. Its relative demographic weight is notwithstanding paradoxical. It tends to grow as compared with the population of France, but clearly to dwindle as compared with the other metropolitan areas of international size. Among the characterics of its peopling one must underscore the high density of the center of this metropolis (Paris), but also some spreading out of the towns. An other salient feature is that the foreign population grows significantly. As to the distribution by ages, it shows an ageing which is slowed by the migratory trend. This trend is indeed an essential fact to understand the demographic dynamics of Ile-de-France. Bringing young people to the region, it sustains a relatively high birth rate, in spite of the low fertility of the couples of french descent. Moreover, the emigration of old people reduces the death rate. Furtherance of the foreign immigration and evolution of the internal migrations make unlikely the carrying out of the official demographic aims.]
