La question du religieux comme espace d’énonciation

The principle of communication, which has been present since the origins of religion, can also be seen as its “vanishing point” in the artistic sense: the necessity of relaying, broadcasting, spreading the divine word is such that it is almost as if religion only really exists insofar as it is transmitted, exposed, expressed in some way to a receiver or audience. While this subject has received increased academic interest within the field of communication over recent years, this paper aims to depict certain possible lines of analysis and certain epistemological challenges which are encountered when studying religion. More specifically, it will approach the catholic Church from a socio-semiotic standpoint, thus taking religion as an object of study and looking, in pragmatic, technical and linguistic terms, at religious activity as an as yet incompletely-defined space of enunciation, in which different signs and discourses meet, mingle, and may sometimes enter into conflict with one another.

Préoccupation présente dès l’origine de la religion, le principe de communication en constitue aussi son point de fuite : véhiculer, diffuser, en somme propager le message divin si bien que la religion ne prendrait sa réelle existence qu’à partir du moment où s’organise sa transmission, son exposition, son expression qui impliquent d’une façon ou d’une autre un destinataire individuel ou collectif. Alors que l’on constate un intérêt renouvelé pour le sujet depuis quelques années au sein des sciences de l’information et de la communication, cette contribution ambitionne de tracer à grand trait quelques voies d’accès, quelques nœuds épistémologiques du champ religieux à partir d’un regard socio-sémiotique sur l’Église catholique : saisir la religion comme objet d’analyse et déplier le fait religieux comme un espace d’énonciation, tant pragmatique que technique et langagier aux limites, certes encore floues, dans lequel circulent, se croisent et se confrontent parfois des signes et des discours.
