Quelles mobilités au Luxembourg et dans son espace transfrontalier ?

Abstract : Luxembourg, compared to its European neighbors, has still a relatively steady economy. Because of its dynamism, Luxembourg still attracts a lot of workers. On the other hand, the limited size of the Grand-Duchy and the rather high housing cost in the country generate a cross-border functional metropolitan area in which automobile flows are considerable. This massive use of cars, indicating an increasing automobile dependency, enables however a large majority of workers to have access to the job market of Luxembourg and to enlarge their choice in terms of lodging and consequently increase their residential mobility. However, this increasing use of cars by workers put some constraints on the strategy decided by householders and individuals concerning their residential mobility. The emerging phenomenon of people deciding to leave their homes in Luxembourg for new accommodations in the surrounding countries confirms the increase of these constraints, a sort of cross-border counter-urbanisation of Luxembourg is in the process. At the same time, the additional daily flows imply new congestions and an increase of greenhouse effect inspite of large roads investments, especially for motorways. The objective of the research project is to find a sustainable balance between the dynamics of residential mobility and daily mobility. More precisely, the research is more orientated towards an analysis of interactions between these two types of mobility for workers employed in the Grand-Duchy and living inside or outside the country. The interactions will be analyzed in a local, regional and cross-border context.
