NON, MAIS TU L'AS VU À LUI ? ANALYSE(S) DU MARQUAGE DIFFÉRENTIEL DE L'OBJET EN FRANÇAIS : ANALYSE(S) DU MARQUAGE DIFFÉRENTIEL DE L'OBJET EN FRANÇAIS

Abstract : We present in this paper a study of differential object marking (DOM) in French. This phenomenon is found in most Romance languages, and sometimes considered not to exist in French, even though it is attested at least regionally. We try to establish its limits on the basis of a large corpus study, combining spoken corpora of different varieties of French, written corpora and internet, as well as diachronic corpora. Looking at the data we gathered, we show that DOM does exist in French, and that it behaves much like it does in other Romance languages. Analyzing the grammaticalization process leading to DOM, and observing among other things the question of reanalysis, we further show that this grammaticalization process is not complete in French, where DOM is still clearly an optional, pragmatic phenomenon.
