The Consistory of Paris and grocery stores: the issue of ritual slaughter (1930s – 1950s)

Eating ritually slaughtered meat is a major pillar of Jewish religious observance. Furthermore, the conformity of food to biblical law (Kashrut) requires strict control over production and sales on the part of religious authorities. During the inter-war years, the « Association consistorial israélite de Paris” (ACIP), which was contested by immigrant Jews from Eastern Europe, had only moderate success in stemming the tide of practices of corruption and fraud of which it was accused. During the occupation, the ACIP sought to maintain the possibility of keeping kosher, thus contributing to slowing the process of economic aryanization that was hitting Jewish restaurants and food shops, as well as helping - in whatever small ways they could - owners of kosher grocery stores to survive. Subsequently, at the beginning of the 1950s, the ACIP was confronted with an influx of North-African Jews with an affirmed religious identity, with whom they had to negotiate in order to rebuild.

La consommation de viandes issues de l’abattage rituel constitue l’un des axes fondamentaux de l’observance religieuse. Or la conformité des aliments aux lois bibliques (la cacherout) requiert de la part des autorités cultuelles un strict contrôle de leur production et de leur commercialisation. Durant l’entre-deux-guerres, l’Association consistoriale israélite de Paris (ACIP), confrontée au dévoiement frauduleux de ces prescriptions et contestée par les Juifs immigrés d’Europe orientale, cherche à endiguer les pratiques avec un succès médiocre. Durant l’Occupation, elle s’attache à maintenir la possibilité de manger cacher, contribuant ainsi à freiner les mesures d’aryanisation économique qui frappent les restaurants et les commerces d’alimentation juifs ainsi qu’à préserver, dans une petite mesure, les vies de leurs propriétaires. Au début des années 1950 enfin, elle est confrontée à l’afflux de Juifs nord-africains à l’identité religieuse affirmée, avec lesquels il va lui falloir à nouveau composer.
