Le regard socio-politique de Charles-Joseph Panckoucke dans le "Grand Vocabulaire François" (1767-1774)

Abstract : This paper expounds the attitude of one of the figureheads of the publishing world during the Enlightenment period: Charles-Joseph Panckoucke. Well-known as being one of the first “press magnates”, one is not always aware of the determining role Panckoucke played concerning the diffusion of the encyclopaedic movement in Europe. Focusing on his first editorial initiative, the Grand Vocabulaire François, the author shows how Panckoucke adopted a singular socio-political attitude regarding the philosophical and political “war machine” that was the Encyclopédie.
