Biodiversity conservation and water security in pastoral landscapes of the Chalbi desert

Conservation de la biodiversité et sécurité de l'eau dans les paysages pastoraux du désert du Chalbi.

Résumé

In the arid land of Northern Kenya, the biodiversity conservation project reflects the debates that have shaped the nexus between biodiversity, water and food security. For long assumptions about the inabilities of pastoralist to manage land degradation and soil and water conservation have been part of environmental policies and legitimized “green grabbing” practices. How does the implementation of natural resources management models interact with pastoralist livelihood in a context of socio-ecological transition? Providing an overview of the services provided by the Chalbi desert ecoystem and the existing models of natural resources management, the presentation questions the relations between conservation practices and the regional environmental dynamics. Using the concept of “landesque capital”, it shows landscapes of the Chalbi inherit from the interaction between pastoralist social and labor organisation and their environment. The relevance of this concept in order to think potential synergies between climate and smart agriculture is discussed through the case of pasotalist farmland implemented in an Asal area. Enhancing natural resources management and pastoralist’s food security, the Kalacha’s farmland raises how the implementation of conservation models have in turn led to more recent experiments and socio-technical choices for biodiversity conservation which sustain pastoralist livelihood. Reflecting local pastoralist innovation in which biodiversity protection, farming system and pastoralist’s food security are associated, we
prompts for suggestions to encompass the split between environmental conservation and development and to better integrate research on pastoralist livelihood and socio-ecological dynamics in smart agriculture.
