L’orientation scolaire et professionnelle des filles : des « choix de compromis » ? : Une enquête auprès de jeunes femmes issues de familles nombreuses

Abstract : In French sociological works about educational and occupational choices, the notion of "compromise-choices" refers to the assumption that girls, more than boys, tend to opt for occupations which they might consider more easily compatible with their future family roles. In doing so, they lower their academic and professional ambitions. In this article, we analyse the extent and the implications of such a notion. Therefore, we focus on the borderline case of young women belonging to large families, who have often seen their mothers facing great difficulties in reconciling their family lives and their professional activities. Our research suggests that only a minority of the women interviewed subordinate their school and occupational choices to such anticipated difficulties. The article aims precisely at determining the social conditions that give rise to these "compromise-choices".
