The interdisciplinary field of Long Term Socio-Ecological Research (LTSER) is supported by CNRS (National Center for Scientific Research). The work carried out is in the Central French Alps platform, where LTSER is especially focused on Vercors mountain climate and vegetation interaction. The goal of this paper is to analyse NDVI data derived from remote measurements of SPOT-VGT over the 1998-2009 period. The study area corresponds to Vercors Regional Park. Firstly we identify and discriminate the phenology among particular land forest cover types (leafy, mixed and coniferous forests) and secondly, to monitor their intraseasonal and interannual response to typical climate conditions, as well as their response to anomalous conditions from extreme weather. Forest NDVI shows regional phenological patterns and spatio-temporal contrasts due to altitude, especially to understand the spring greenup variability. Extreme forest phenological anomalies are evident from the NDVI correlated to temperature and precipitation variations observed during 1998-2009 period. However, due to numerous interactions it remains complicated to establish a precise eco-climatic diagnostic. Apart from extreme specific episodes (e.g. 2004 and 2007), NDVI integrated over the growing season (the photosynthetically active radiation period) seems to indicate a positive trend between 1998 and 2009, perhaps indicating an increase in the foliar activity forced by the significant rise in temperature since the late 1980s.
