Baths in the City: Antioch-on-the-Orontes in Antiquity

Bains et histoire urbaine. L’exemple d’Antioche sur l’Oronte dans l’Antiquité

This paper is based on an inventory of mentions of baths located in Antioch in the ancient textual sources. Such inventory allows to estimate the number of baths in Antioch, to assess the chronology of the building of baths in the city and to connect it with the evolution of the urban space. Furthermore, it allows to study the role of thermal buildings in the urban landscape and in the memorial and social construction of the urban space and of the city as an institution.

Le point de départ de cet essai est un inventaire des mentions d’édifices thermaux antiochéens dans les sources écrites antiques. Cet inventaire permet de proposer une évaluation de l’importance du parc thermal antiochéen, de préciser la chronologie de sa mise en place et de la mettre en relation avec l’évolution de l’espace urbain, et enfin d’étudier le rôle des édifices thermaux dans la constitution du paysage urbain et dans la construction mémorielle et sociale de la cité et de la ville.
