Le modèle américain ou une modernité partagée?: Les collèges protestants à Beyrouth et Kyoto, 1860-1875

Abstract : American Made Elsewhere: Local Inspirations of American Protestant Colleges in Beirut and Kyoto (1860-1975) This article traces the genealogy and genesis of Dôshisha University, by analyzing the links between networks, agendas and funding that connects it to the Syrian Protestant College (today’s American University of Beirut) and indirectly to the National Academy of Butros Bustani. In so doing, the article shows that a global perspective on an ostensibly national event can significantly change the received narrative and help raise new questions for historical inquiry.
