RIGHT TO THE CITY AS AN URBAN UTOPIA? PRACTICES OF EVERY DAY RESISTANCE IN A ROMANI NEIGHBOURHOOD IN ISTANBUL

The research draws on a campaign organised against a renewal project in the Sulukule neighbourhood of Istanbul, which aimed to destroy entirely the gipsy settlements. Lefebvre’s theories and ideas about the urban space, especially the concept of the right to the city and the social production of urban space, will, in this paper, help highlight the social dynamics of urban protests and everyday forms of resistance. After explaining methodological tools, the paper will highlight firstly the evolution of urban policies in Turkey, before explaining the mobilisation process in the neighbourhood. The emphasis will be placed on how identity and space shape the protest in order to reclaim a right to the city.
