La correspondance entre Bouilhet et Flaubert, à partir de L’Éducation sentimentale – et au-delà…

Abstract : Flaubert and Bouilhet made a pair of friends before becoming peers in literature: close to being twins, they always wrote in a specular relation, the epistolary exchange allowing them, when they could not meet, to continue their aesthetic and critical dialogue that was both necessary and vital for their creation. While focusing on the time of conception and writing of L’Éducation sentimentale, we will show that the correspondence is the place where the maieutic process goes on, whereby each writer is the other’s patient and respectful midwife of the other’s thought. In spite of the paradoxical and maybe audacious dimension of this suggestion, we will wonder whether Flaubert’s completion of his last project (Bouvard et Pécuchet) could not be considered as the continuation of a remote communication between the two friends, as the implementation of a correspondence with a definitively absent and yet still efficient addressee.
