La sécheresse dans l'Etat du Parana (Brésil) : observation et suivi par télédétection.

Abstract : The Paraná State, located in the Brazil southern region, has characteristics of a transition climate. This is originated by atmospheric dynamics produced by tropical and extratropical systems. This dynamic favors significant rainfall variability, and also the occurence of dry and wet events with different intensities and frequencies periods. This research analyzes the rainfall spatial and temporal variability in the Paraná state, from 1976 to 2011, considering the impact of the driest periods. We used monthly precipitation from sixty three rain stations. The total amounts of precipitation were grouped into percentiles (0.10; 0.35; 0.65, and 0.9) , and then ranked according to these values. The results suggest a marked interannual variation in relation to ENSO. To verify the temporal and spatial scale of the droughts impact in different seasons, we identified two extreme years for the rainy season (October to March, 1999/00 and 2009/10). These data were associated with spatiotemporal products Normalized Differential Vegetation Index (NDVI) derived from SPOT Vegetation in order to examine the temporal and spatial extent of the droughts impacts. The highest NDVI values are always observed during the rainy season. Vegetation indices vary both in association with water deficits, related to the tropical characteristics of this region, and with the strong seasonality of the agricultural calendar. The rainfall variability and drier periods impact differently the Paraná State regions as a function of vegetation cover types.
