Ambiances nocturnes des villes. Premières relectures en mouvement

Abstract : Communications, based particularly on the field explorations led across cities since 1990 in about one hundred European conurbations[1], broaches the issue of urban atmospheres by night. The nocturnal routes taken from one edge of our cities to the other offer an opportunity to experience the city at walking pace. They give a first new picture of the urban night, of its contrasts and opportunities, and they highlight, in particular, the differences in perception between people, the disparities between the centre and the periphery, the barriers that stand in the way of mobility, and the boundaries between neighbourhoods. After an initial analysis of the conditions of existence of an atmosphere, the emphasis is put on the utility of these aware and participative approaches in the process of producing the city and its neighbourhoods. It questions the "moving atmospheres" in a mobility society. Finally, the geographer would argue in favour of cities that are more accessible, friendly, and hospitable, and proposes "nocturnal urban planning" and new "public space ergonomics." Assuredly, the night has a lot to tell the day.
