This paper raises the question of the connections between modernity and identity in the field of architecture and urban space of Baghdad. Given that to a certain extent "westernization" is generally seen as embedded in "modernization" and even in modernity, I'll attempt to define the ways and the limits within which architecture and urban space in Baghdad have been used by different narratives in affirming a modern "Arab" or "Iraqi" identity.

Cet article soulève la question du rapport modernité-identité dans le domaine de la production architecturale et de l'espace urbain à Bagdad des années 20 aux années 2000. Dans la mesure où le concept d'occidentalisation est généralement attaché à ceux de modernisation et modernité, il tente de définir les processus sur lesquels, localement, se sont construites différentes phases de discours d'affirmation se réclamant d'une identité "arabe" ou "irakienne" moderne.
