Of Modernity as Heritage, of Heritage as Future

Abstract : This paper has two aims. The first one will attempt to give evidence that the world ranking n°1 of France in terms of tourism and heritage does not fully depend upon the quality of French heritage, to which others could be compared. It can be explained by the fact that France has one of the oldest and most experimented traditions in managing heritage, but also by the fact that heritage is understood as a national good, identity, and source of income. The second aim consists of a comparative vision of what could be seen as a modern, even recent, and vernacular heritage in Iraq, and especially Baghdad, according to the main guidelines of what is considered as modern heritage in France.
