Le pouvoir cadratif des compléments introduits par 'à travers': des cadres de discours pas comme les autres?

Abstract : Most studies on discourse frames have dealt with static spatial adverbials. The aim of this paper is to discuss the capacity of dynamic spatial complements formed by the preposition à travers 'through' to move in sentence-initial position and to function as framing adverbials. Our study is based on some 600 sentences beginning with PPs introduced by à travers. Arguing that initial positioning of spatial adverbials can establish scope over larger discourse segments, we first show that the possibility for dynamic PPs forms by à travers to appear in sentence-initial position grows when they are combined with verbs of perception and more generally with direct transitive verbs. Second, we show that in some cases these initial adverbials have indisputably framing potential. As framing adverbials, in accordance with the semantics of the preposition à travers, these spatial PPs give access to the scene perceived and described by the speaker. This description is what the dynamic spatial adverbial formed by à travers frames or indexes by extending its discourse and/or semantic scope. Finally, we tackle the issue of the way these very particular discourse frames are cancelled.
