Inside the demographic evolution of the world, the tremendous change of world population must be considered according to the increase of urbanization and to two of its consequences: the reduced population density of country-side and the demographic deceleration. It follows that a greater importance will have the ageing of population and the need for a proper local governance; the last particularly to manage high people concentrations in very large towns. With these aspects in mind, it would be possible to reflect on mankind future taking into account the occurring demographic changes.

Insisteremo qui di seguito su due tra i grandi processi demografici in atto: da una parte, la decelerazione che si inserisce nel quadro della transizione demografica e dei comportamenti relativi alla fecondità nei paesi che si situano in una condizione che definiamo 'post-transizionale', dall'altra parte, l'urbanizzazione.
