De Tinian à Clarens. Les enjeux du retour de Saint-Preux
Résumé
Rousseau's Julie ou la nouvelle Heloise is structured in two main halves, between which the journey of Saint-Preux to the islands of Tinian and Juan Fernandez draws a dividing line. The second half is dedicated to the return journey. However, unlike the travellers of the Enlightenment, Saint-Preux does not bring back an experience of elsewhere. Rousseau shifts the emphasis: the return engages an experience of repetition, which provokes a "revolution of being", in the double sense of "revolution": return of the star to the same point and brutal change. This revolution produces a new relationship to Julie, to the landscape, to the political community. In this apprehension of the return, Rousseau takes up the aesthetic reflection he had developed on music: the "redoubled blows" generated by the return are defined as the very place of the shaking. In this way, La Nouvelle Héloïse gives a new and fertile scope to the "return"
