Mémoires de sang : transmission et silences autour des menstrues (France urbaine)

Abstract : Based ont the life histories of a number of French women born after World War II, this article explores certain aspects of the socializing impact of menstrual blood at the two ends of reproductive life : the first menstrual period and the menopause. The author tries to understand wether the family and friends of the subjects of the study shared their knowledge and practices relating to the start and end of reproductive cycle. The mother is central to these stories, but the transmissions are complex, because discussion of menstruation and the menopause means going beyond a comparison between individual bodies : menstrual blood both signifies and suggests procréation, sexuality and one generation following another.
