A derogatory collective narrative around the first President of Tanzania, Julius Nyerere, circulates in the islands of Zanzibar today. Against Nyerere's ever more deferential memorial trajectory in mainland Tanzania, Zanzibar stands out as an exception. This article presents the outline of this pejorative account of Nyerere in relation to two major events in the history of the Isles : the Revolution of 1964, myth of a free and sovereign Zanzibari nation ; and the Union with Tanganyika. It also shows how this derogatory narrative is connected to the Muslim question which, in Zanzibar, amounts to a collective identity positioning. The article concludes that, in a society which has neither a father of the nation nor a shared narrative of the nation, Nyerere constitutes a negative national narrative.
