La division du travail gouvernemental : Logiques de distribution des portefeuilles et carrières gouvernementales

Abstract : Our paper aims at understanding the social and political logics in the assignment of government portfolios under the French 5th Republic (1986-2012). A first step consists in analysing what are the logic of government portfolios assignment according to their prestige and technical nature. This analyse permits to work out a typology of the division of the executive work at the governmental level, to emphasize the effects of the political configuration and to identify the members of government which, because they benefit from the highest social and political capitals, are able to hold many different portfolios during their career. A second step aims at working out a typology of post-governmental trajectories in order to determine whether the experience of a certain portfolio favours a certain type of trajectory (political advancement, start of a new career in another social field...).The paper is based on the analysis of a database that we have created from the biographies of French members of government. It gathers data about the social and political features of members of government from 1986 to 2012.
