This paper addresses the use of tenses in subclauses. More in particular, it addresses the question whether syntactic subordination results in temporal subordination. The focus is on relative clauses. It is shown that the syntactic status of the subclause (non-restrictive vs. restrictive) impacts on the tense system. The paper also illustrates in what way situation types constrain the choice of a relative tense and/or an absolute tense.
