The Adversary, a narrative by Emmanuel Carrère, based on a sordid and disconcerting true story, fundamentally revolves around the act of transgression - that of Jean-Claude Romand who, after deceiving his relatives for 18 years into thinking he was a renowned doctor, killed all his family when everything was about to come out into the open. But Carrère, in identifying Romand with the "Adversary", that is with Satan, proposes a metaphysical, moral, social, as well as literary reading of transgression. For the combination of deception with murder actually not only causes the irruption of Evil in apparently peaceful lives: it also challenges language itself and a writing which has to deal with a man both monstrously other and monstrously familiar. So, looking at it more closely, it seems that the explosion of transgression in The Adversary is to be read more as an anxious consciousness of the flimsiness of the boundaries than as the latter being called into question.
L'Adversaire d'Emmanuel Carrère, récit consacré à un fait divers sordide et déroutant, a pour sujet essentiel la transgression : celle de J-C Romand, qui après avoir menti pendant 18 ans à ses proches en se faisant passer pour un illustre médecin, a assassiné toute sa famille au moment d'être découvert. Mais Carrère, en identifiant Romand à " L'Adversaire ", c'est-à-dire à Satan, présente une lecture à la fois métaphysique, morale, sociale et littéraire de cette transgression. Car la combinaison du mensonge et du meurtre ne provoque pas seulement une irruption du Mal dans des existences qui semblaient protégées : elle s'en prend au langage lui-même et à l'écriture confrontée à un homme la fois monstrueusement étranger et monstrueusement ressemblant. Alors, à y regarder de plus près, la déflagration de la transgression dans L'Adversaire est davantage à lire sous l'angle d'une conscience angoissée de la fragilité des frontières que sous celui de leur remise en cause.
