Missionnaires maristes et anthropologie au XIXème siècle : aux sources de l'ethnologie et des collections océaniennes ?

Abstract : Around 1830 the congregation for the Propagation of the Faith asks the Marist Fathers of Oceania about the ethnographical background of the populations with whom they are in contact. There follows twenty letters of ethnographic interest between 1838 and 1850. Even if the missionaries proceed along lines other than anthropological, they have made available a useful mass of ethnographical information. Fr Verguet may be noted for his approach which is more scientific than the others. Certain fathers are at the origin of various collections of oceanic artifacts. Fr Montrouzier may even be called a true naturalist.
