Certain et ses avatars (certain N/un certain N ; certains N/de certains N ; certains) : approche diachronique

This article accounts for the changes undergone by the form certain between the 16th and the 20th century. It is shown in particular that while the plural form completed its categorial transformations in the 16th century, the singular form only began its own evolution at that time. Moreover, whereas the contexts of use of certainsg were gradually reduced to the expression of intensity, the uses of certainpl, and accordingly its semantic values, underwent extension. The originality of this evolution is twofold. First, in contrast to many other indefinites which started off as determiners and pronouns, certain(s), initially an adjective, specialised as a determiner without giving up its adjectival potential, and eventually acquired pronominal uses (first partitive, then absolute). Second, this evolution starts at the point where that of many other indefinites ends: namely with the expression of specificity.
Cet article retrace les changements qu'a subis la forme certain entre le 16e et le 20e siècle. On montre notamment que le pluriel a achevé dès le 16e siècle les transformations catégorielles que le singulier entame à cette même époque, que si certainsg a progressivement réduit ses contextes d'emploi en se spécialisant dans l'expression de l'intensité des référents de certaines catégories nominales, certainpl a, au contraire, multiplié les siens, ainsi que ses catégories et ses valeurs sémantiques. Cette évolution est doublement originale car, à la différence de bon nombre d'indéfinis au départ déterminants et pronoms, certain(s), initialement adjectif, s'est spécialisé dans le rôle de déterminant sans abandonner celui d'adjectif, pour s'ouvrir, très longtemps après, aux emplois pronominaux (partitifs d'abord puis absolus). Il commence cette évolution là où bon nombre d'autres indéfinis finissent la leur : à savoir à l'expression de la spécificité.
