La construction sociale du travail intérimaire : de ses origines aux États-Unis à son institutionnalisation en France

The aim of this paper is the study of the historical development of temporary work. Temporary workers agencies (TWA) appear first at the beginning of the last century in the United States and in the United Kingdom. From the years 1940 on, their fast development carried by large companies of temporary work would be based first of all on the secretarial work needs. Introduced in France during the 1950s, its institutionalization (economic, social, and political recognition as a useful activity for the community) has been progressive.

Cet article s'intéresse au développement historique du travail intérimaire. Cette forme d'emploi a fait son apparition au début du siècle dernier aux États-Unis et en Grande-Bretagne. À partir des années 1940, porté par de grandes entreprises de travail temporaire nouvellement créées, son développement rapide concernera tout d'abord le domaine du secrétariat. Introduit en France au début des années 1950, son institutionnalisation, c'est-à-dire sa reconnaissance économique, sociale et politique, sera progressive.
