Abstract : When thinking about the numerous problems that adapting Proust's Le Temps retrouvé raises, three main lines of questioning can be identified: one examines the scenes selection, the other the quasi disappearance of theory, and the last the choice of actors. Speaking about his adaptation of Proust's Le Temps retrouvé, Raoul Ruiz insisted on the faithfulness of his film both with regards the spirit and - to a certain extent - the letter of the novel, claiming that 'tout ce qui est dans le film est dans l'œuvre de Proust'. In this article however, I would like to examine whether in fact he is not solely concentrating on the plot line of La Recherche and thence argue that Proust's great novel cannot be reduced to its story in that way.
