Pascal : la vie ou l'œuvre ?

Abstract : The Life of M. Pascal, in one of two competing forms (the original or the amplified one), almost always comes with the text of the Pensées. What does this co-existence mean ? Would the Life be the basis, the condition of possibility of a fragmentary, incomplete, evanescent work ? On the contrary, Gilberte Périer has designed her biographical evocation as an alternative to the text. This study examines the status of a modern "legend", in its relationship with an uncertain masterpiece.
