L'entrée en dépendance des personnes âgées : quelle prise en charge pour quelles différenciations sociales et sexuées ? Une comparaison France-Suède

Abstract : When elderly persons become dependent : What type of care for what social and gender differences ? This article presents the results of research comparing the assistance provided to dependent elderly persons in France as well as in Sweden, and examines social and gender differences in how they use the tools offered to them by public policies. After describing support systems for the elderly, the authors present the results of a qualitative survey. Thus, they examine dependency long-term care trajectories, from initial symptoms to institutional recognition via the grant of public aid. Considering a person's "entry-into-dependence" as a process involving such aid and the intervention of "care givers" (belonging both to the private and public sectors), the authors question the organization of such assistance : in the "entry-into-dependence" trajectory, who does what, and when ? The survey subsequently highlights the fact that differentiations as well as gender and class inequalities are far more pronounced in France than in Sweden.
