The theatrical language under the test of translation - For a re-translation of "The Teahouse" by Lao She

Abstract : If Lao She (1899-1966) is among the most translated Chinese writers in France, it is with astonishment and regret that we note, for his famous play, The Tea House, that there is only one French translation without signature published in 1980 by the Foreign Languages Publishing House in Beijing. Starting from the characteristics of the theatrical language of Lao She, we will conduct an analysis of the existing translation of The Tea House, to highlight the issue of theater translation and advocate for a retranslation of this brilliant Chinese work. Also we will put forward this question and wish to encourage debate on the utility of the translation of Chinese theater: is it reserved for a specialist audience of Chinese Studies, or open to the world of the theater waiting for the director?
