Potlatsch und Verwandtschaft

Abstract : The article analyzes the relational logic common to ritual and matrimonial organization on the American North West Coast. Starting from a correspondence between the basic relations of the potlatch - transmission and mediation - and of kinship - filiation and alliance - we examine the different configurations of these relations among the Haida/Tlingit and among the Southern Kwakiutl, as well as their spatial expression in ritual architecture. We argue that the principle of this common logic consists in a fundamental inversion of perspectives, which is not restricted to the sphere of exchange between kinship groups, but equally governs the constitution and reproduction of the groups themselves.
