L'axiomatisation et les théories économiques. Réponse aux critiques

This essay aims at first reconsidering the " axiomatic method ", and then showing how it is implemented in Debreu's general equilibrium theory, von Neumann and Morgenstern's theory of decision, and Arrow's, Nash's and their followers' contributions to normative economics. We separate an axiomatisation from other ways of formalization in terms of the following: first, a formal system, and second, the orderly interaction of a syntax and a semantics. We argue that logical calculi constitute a model of axiomatization that can be reproduced at least analogically elsewhere in science. Although economic axiomatizations follow Bourbaki's set-theoretic style, they exhibit strongly distinctive features. Semantics is hardly formalized, and very often kept fixed throughout. In terms of a novel distinction of this paper, the economists' formal systems are " theorematic " rather than " definitional ". We conclude by objecting to the notion of axiomatisation adopted in normative economics.
Ce travail réexamine la "méthode axiomatique" avant de montrer comment elle s'applique en théorie de l'équilibre général avec Debreu, en théorie de la décision avec von Neumann et Morgenstern, en théorie normative avec Arrow, Nash et leurs successeurs. On fera ressortir ce qui différencie l'axiomatisation des autres procédés de formalisation mathématique : principalement, la notion de système formel et l'interaction réglée d'une syntaxe et d'une sémantique. On défendra l'idée que les calculs logiques constituent un modèle au moins imitable analogiquement par toutes les axiomatisations. Celles des économistes répondent au "genre ensembliste" représenté ailleurs par Bourbaki tout en présentant une forte spécificité. La sémantique y est peu formalisée et souvent fixée une fois pour toutes ; les systèmes formels sont "théorématiques" plutôt que "définitionnels", suivant une distinction nouvelle introduite par ce travail. Il conduit à remettre en cause la notion d'axiomatique retenue par l'économie nominative.
