Des contradictions du théâtre critique new-yorkais

Résumé

This text reflects on the ways in which theater and politics are interwoven, centering on a panel of off-off Broadway plays and on the theatrical action in post-2000 New York, both of which produced "social commentary" on the politics of the Bush administration, and particularly on the war in Iraq. These repertoires are inscribed in a middle ground that embroils aesthetic and political codes, and is obedient to logics both different and similar, auto-referential and sometimes transgressed, overwhelmed by tertiary concerns. The text considers the debt that such interstitial practices owe to the reciprocal and partial absorptions between theater and politics. Political theater effectively confronts a double risk: that of the loss of artistic legitimacy when its political dimension becomes predominant; and that of the depoliticization of institutionally artistic works. We will first examine how theatre and politics intertwine in the history of American political theatre after WWII, and also in the personal histories of theatre professionals, across their socialization. We must then ask: to what degree does militant theatre enable artists to bring contemporary political questions to a heterogeneous public, while running the risk of aesthetic depreciation? Ultimately, and paradoxically, political theatre, by inscribing itself in theatrical tradition, is caught in a contradiction between appearing as a specific sub-genre, and satisfying the economic necessity and political project of enlarging its public without preaching to the choir.
