Les enveloppes solaires de Ralph Knowles, ou les ambivalences d'un modèle de régulation des formes urbaines

Abstract : Defined by Ralph. Knowles in the early 1970s, the model of solar envelopes offers a solution for regulating the urban fabric according to solar rights. This paper presents this model and discusses its ambivalences. Both a geometric representation of a formal organizational problem of urban density and an experimental setup used to analyze this problem, the solar envelopes are also the expression of an ideal urban model related to the utopias of the 1970s. Brought by the advent of computer graphics from the 1980s, they have stood the test of time to respond to the present injunctions of the sustainable city. These transformations reflect a strong plasticity of the model, between an urban ideal, a scientific formalization, and a CAD tool.
